DRIWON DN-9500 Grade 1 – a cast iron door closer with a wrought steel arm and heat-treated piston, built for the doors that get pushed, kicked and cycled the most. Here is when cast iron is worth it, and when aluminum is enough.
For schools, hospitals, factories, stadiums, transit and every high-abuse commercial opening.
Wrought steel arm, heat-treated piston
Tested beyond 2 million cycles
With delayed action & positive latch
On rated door assemblies

Both materials can meet ANSI/BHMA Grade 1. The difference shows up in abuse resistance and long-term durability on the toughest doors, not in the grade on the label.
| Cast iron (DN-9500) | Aluminum (DN-8220) | |
|---|---|---|
| Impact resistance | High; resists deformation from abuse | Good for normal commercial use |
| Weight | Heavier, more rigid | Lighter, easier to handle |
| Corrosion | Needs a protective finish (powder coat) | Naturally corrosion resistant |
| Best for | Schools, hospitals, factories, stadiums, stairs, exterior doors | Offices, retail, clinics, hotel guest corridors |
| Grade / fire rating | Grade 1, UL 3-hour on rated doors | Grade 1, UL 3-hour on rated doors |
For interior doors with normal traffic, an aluminum Grade 1 closer like the DN-8220 is lighter, easier to install and fully adequate. Many facilities standardize on cast iron for corridors, stairs and entrances, and aluminum for offices and suites.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90° to 12° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.

For high-abuse, heavy or exterior doors, yes: cast iron is more rigid and impact resistant. For normal interior commercial doors, aluminum Grade 1 closers are fully adequate.
They can be. The DRIWON DN-9500 (cast iron) and DN-8220 (aluminum) are both ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and UL listed.
Cast iron needs a protective finish. The DN-9500 has a corrosion-resistant powder coat; inspect exposed units periodically.
It is heavier, but installation is the same: use the template, fasten into proper reinforcement and adjust the valves.
The cast iron DN-9500 for corridors, gyms, stairs and entrances; the aluminum DN-8220 can be used on low-traffic office doors.
