Fitness facilities are hard on door hardware. Members carry bags and push doors with their shoulders, 24-hour clubs never stop cycling, and locker rooms add heat and humidity. Specify an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 closer with a corrosion-resistant finish, backcheck or delayed action and a durable arm, and keep exterior and access-controlled doors latching every time.
Warm, moist air from showers, saunas and pools speeds up corrosion on bare metal. The DN-9500 has a corrosion-resistant powder coat in silver or black. In wet areas, inspect closers twice a year, wipe down the body and arm, check fasteners and confirm closing speed, since temperature swings can change hydraulic fluid viscosity.
Stair doors, corridor doors in rated walls and mechanical rooms must be self-closing and latching under NFPA 80 and NFPA 101. The DN-9500 is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated when installed on a rated door assembly.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.
School and campus gymnasiums are covered on our school door closer page, and the high-traffic door closer guide explains why Grade 1 matters at heavy-use entrances.
