Sanctuary, hall & exit doors
Tested beyond 2 million cycles
With delayed action & positive latch
On rated door assemblies

Sanctuary doors are often solid wood, oversized and exposed to wind, and they see intense traffic in short bursts. Lighter residential or Grade 3 closers cannot control that weight for long. Use an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 hydraulic closer at a high power setting (size 5β6 for large doors), with backcheck or delayed action and a heavy arm. The DN-9500 is adjustable from size 1 to 6 for doors up to 440 lbs and 59" wide.
Sanctuaries and halls are assembly occupancies. Under the IBC, egress doors serving assembly spaces with an occupant load of 50 or more that have a latch or lock must use panic or fire exit hardware. The closer has to bring the door fully closed so that exit device latches every time. Doors in rated stair enclosures, corridors and hazardous rooms must also be self-closing and latching under NFPA 80, using a closer listed for the assembly.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.
Every faith community uses its building differently, and that changes which doors work hardest. The code basics are the same (assembly occupancy, panic hardware on larger egress doors, self-closing rated doors), but traffic patterns, environments and security needs are not.
Church entrances are often solid wood, oversized and sometimes historic. Plan for a high power setting (size 5β6), strong backcheck and a heavy arm, and check that the hinges or pivots can carry the door: a closer cannot fix a sagging door. On historic doors, agree on mounting with your preservation team; a surface-mounted closer is easier to remove later than concealed hardware that requires cutting the door. See our guides to door closers for heavy doors and exterior door closers.
Traffic peaks sharply at the daily prayers and even more at Friday (Jumu'ah) prayer and Eid. Many mosques have separate entrances for men and women, which means more doors to equip and maintain. Ablution (wudu) areas and shoe-removal zones bring water and humidity close to doors, so a corrosion-resistant powder-coated finish and regular wipe-downs matter. Inside the prayer hall, tune the latch speed for quiet closing.
Security is often the first concern. A closer that fully seats the door is what lets locks, electric strikes and access control engage every time. Nonprofit houses of worship may be eligible for the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), which funds physical security enhancements; whether specific door hardware qualifies depends on your approved project, so check with your state administering agency. Hydraulic door closers are purely mechanical and need no power, which is convenient where electrical devices are not used on Shabbat and holidays.
Hindu and Buddhist temples and Sikh gurdwaras share the same needs: busy main entrances, shoe areas and, in many cases, community kitchens. Kitchen doors are often in rated walls and exposed to grease and heat; our commercial kitchen door closer page covers those openings.
Many congregations rely on volunteers or a small facilities staff. Standardizing on one adjustable Grade 1 model keeps spare parts simple, and a durable cast iron closer reduces the service calls that come with lighter hardware. Check every closer once a year: confirm the door closes and latches, look for oil leaks and tighten loose screws.
For venue-style buildings, see our theater and auditorium door closers. To learn how to tune each valve, read our guide to adjusting door closer speed, backcheck and delayed action.

A Grade 1 hydraulic closer that adjusts up to size 6, with backcheck and a heavy arm, such as the DRIWON DN-9500. It handles doors up to 440 lbs and 59" wide.
Under the IBC, egress doors serving assembly spaces with 50 or more occupants that have a latch or lock generally require panic hardware. A closer helps the door close fully so the device latches. Confirm with your AHJ.
Slow the closing and latch speed valves in small increments and set backcheck. A Grade 1 closer gives you separate control of each phase.
Only on doors that are not fire rated. Fire doors can be held open only by devices tied to the fire alarm that release automatically.
Yes. It is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated when installed on a rated door assembly.
A Grade 1 closer with a corrosion-resistant finish, backcheck and enough power for busy entrances at prayer times, such as the DRIWON DN-9500. Tune the latch speed for quiet closing near the prayer hall.
NSGP funds physical security enhancements for eligible nonprofits, including many houses of worship. Whether a specific closer or lock qualifies depends on your approved project, so confirm with your state administering agency.
Yes. A hydraulic door closer is fully mechanical: it stores energy when the door is opened by hand and needs no power to close it.
