Why Stairwell Doors Need a Dedicated Closer Strategy

Stair doors are the most code-sensitive doors in most buildings. An enclosed exit stair is a protected escape route: if one door is propped open or fails to latch, smoke can fill the stair on every floor. That is why stair doors must be self-closing and positively latching, and why fire marshals check them first during inspections. The closer is part of the listed fire door assembly, so it must be UL listed for use on rated doors.

Pressurized Stairwells and Stack Effect

In high-rise buildings, stairs are often pressurized to keep smoke out, and stack effect pushes air through stair doors all winter. Both create pressure on the door. The closer needs enough power and a firm latch speed to close against it, yet NFPA 101 limits the force needed to open egress doors (in general, 30 lbf to set the door in motion and 15 lbf to release the latch). The way to balance both is an adjustable closer, set with the pressurization system and HVAC running, then verified with a door pressure gauge.

Tip: Most stair doors that "don't latch" are fighting pressure or a misaligned frame. Check the frame and strike first, then increase latch speed in small steps before raising the power size.

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90° to 12° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.

Specifying Stairwell Door Closers

  1. Read the fire label on every stair door and frame (60, 90 minutes or 3 hours).
  2. Record door weight, width and swing; stair doors are usually heavy hollow metal.
  3. Choose the arm position: parallel arm keeps the arm out of the stair path and protects it from abuse.
  4. Note any stair pressurization or stack effect and set the closer with systems running.
  5. Log every stair door for the annual NFPA 80 fire door inspection.

Stairwell Door Closer FAQ

Do stairwell doors need door closers?

Yes. Doors in enclosed exit stairs are fire door assemblies and must be self-closing and positively latching under NFPA 80 and the IBC.

Can stairwell doors be propped open?

Only with a hold-open device that releases automatically on fire alarm or smoke detection. Wedges and kick-down stops are not allowed on fire doors.

What fire rating do stairwell doors need?

Typically 60 minutes in 1-hour stair enclosures and 90 minutes in 2-hour enclosures, depending on building height and code. Check the door and frame labels.

What size door closer does a stair door need?

Most 36" hollow metal stair doors use a size 3–4 setting; heavier, wider or pressurized doors need 4–6. The DRIWON DN-9500 adjusts from 1 to 6.

Why won't my stairwell door latch?

Usually stair pressurization, stack effect or a misaligned frame. Fix alignment first, then increase latch speed, and only then raise the power size.

Is the DN-9500 approved for stairwell doors?

It is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated when installed on a rated door assembly, which covers standard 60- and 90-minute stair doors.
