Heavy Duty Door Closers for Factories, Warehouses and Production Areas

Industrial doors are heavy, abused and often exposed to dust, vibration, temperature swings and forklift or cart traffic. They also separate areas with different hazards, noise levels or climate. A door that does not close is a safety and efficiency problem. The DN-9500 is built for this: a cast iron body, a wrought steel arm and a heat-treated piston for long life.

Safety, OSHA Exit Routes and Fire Doors

OSHA exit route rules require that exit doors can be opened from the inside without keys or special knowledge, and fire doors in rated separations must close and latch as designed (see NFPA 80). The DN-9500 is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated on rated door assemblies. Closers should never be disabled with a wedge or a hold-open hack: where hold-open is needed on a fire door, use a listed hold-open or magnetic device.

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.

Maintenance tip: in dusty plants, wipe down the closer body and inspect the arm and fasteners on a regular schedule. Hydraulic fluid leaks or a sluggish door are the signs to replace the unit.

Specifying for Plant and Warehouse Projects

  1. Survey door weights, widths and rated status.
  2. Note environmental conditions: dust, washdown, temperature.
  3. Standardize on one closer to cut spare parts inventory.
  4. Plan routine inspections as part of safety audits.

Warehouses and Distribution Centers

Distribution centers combine long exterior walls, dock areas and constant forklift traffic. Personnel doors next to dock doors are hit by wind every time an overhead door opens, so they need firm backcheck and enough power to latch in a draft (see exterior door closers). Doors between the warehouse and offices, break rooms or battery-charging areas are often fire rated and must self-close. Wide equipment doors benefit from delayed action.

Dust, Washdown and Temperature-Controlled Areas

Dusty production areas shorten the life of exposed arms and pivots, so wipe down closers on a schedule. In washdown areas, protect closers from direct spray and choose a corrosion-resistant finish. Freezers and walk-in coolers are specialty applications: standard hydraulic closers are not intended for sub-zero rooms, so use hardware rated for the temperature. Industrial Door Closer FAQ

What door closer is best for factory doors?

A Grade 1 extra heavy duty hydraulic closer with a cast iron body, like the DRIWON DN-9500, rated for doors up to 440 lbs.

Can I hold a fire door open with a closer?

Do not wedge or disable a closer on a fire door. Use a listed hold-open device if needed.

What is the maximum door weight?

The DN-9500 handles doors from 44–440 lbs and 23"–59" wide.

Do you offer volume pricing for plants?

Yes. Use the form below.

What closer is best for a warehouse door next to a loading dock?

A cast iron Grade 1 closer with firm backcheck and high power, such as the DN-9500, to handle wind when dock doors open.

Can door closers be used in freezers?

Standard hydraulic closers are not intended for sub-zero rooms. Use hardware rated for the low temperature.

How do I maintain closers in dusty plants?

Wipe the body and arm regularly, check fasteners and valves during safety audits and replace units that leak or close sluggishly.
