In a movie theater, a door slam is more than hardware wear: it disturbs the audience, and a door left ajar lets light and sound into the auditorium. The key is a closer you can tune. With separate adjustment of closing speed and latch speed, the DN-9500 can swing the door closed smoothly and then seat the latch gently.
Cinemas are assembly occupancies where egress is critical. Doors on exit routes and in fire-rated separations must self-close and latch (NFPA 80, NFPA 101). The DN-9500 is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated on rated assemblies.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.

Auditorium doors often carry acoustic seals and light-blocking gaskets. Seals add resistance at the end of the swing, so a closer that latches a bare door may leave a sealed door just short of closed, leaking light and sound. Raise latch speed slightly, then power size if needed, and test in a darkened room. Heavier acoustic doors are covered on our heavy door closer page.
Every auditorium has exit doors with panic hardware that must open freely and latch again after each show. The closer has to bring the door fully into the exit device even after crowds push it wide open. Between shows, cleaning crews move carts through the same doors; delayed action helps without leaving doors open during the film. Lobbies with large glass entrances face the same wind issues described on our exterior door closer page.
