Restaurant doors face heat, grease, moisture and nonstop use. During a lunch rush, a kitchen door may cycle hundreds of times an hour. A Grade 1 closer with a cast iron body and a protective powder-coated finish stands up to this far better than a light-duty or residential unit.
Health codes often require self-closing, tight-fitting doors on exterior openings and restroom doors of food establishments. Check your local health department rules. Doors between the kitchen and other spaces can also be part of a fire-rated separation; the DN-9500 is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated on rated assemblies, and exit doors must close and latch under NFPA 101.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and a closer must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to swing from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Fire doors are the exception on opening force: the authority having jurisdiction sets the minimum. Always check local code and your AHJ.

Restaurant back doors face deliveries, trash runs and weather all day. A door that stays ajar invites pests, lets conditioned air escape and can be a health inspection finding. Set backcheck so staff carrying bags cannot throw the door into the wall, raise latch speed so the door seats against the weatherstripping and size up for wind. Our exterior door closer page explains the settings, and delayed action helps with carts and hand trucks.
Restroom doors in food establishments are commonly required to be self-closing, and they are on accessible routes, so they must also meet ADA limits: a closing time of at least 5 seconds from 90Β° to 12Β° and, for interior doors, no more than 5 lbf to open. Dining room and patio doors should close quietly near guests. Note that double-acting kitchen swing doors need floor springs or pivots, not a standard overhead closer; see our restaurant door hardware guide.
