What Is a Delayed Action Door Closer?

A standard closer starts closing the door as soon as it is released. A delayed action door closer has an extra hydraulic valve that greatly slows the first part of the closing cycle, so the door pauses near the open position for several seconds before the normal closing sweep begins. It does not lock the door open: the door always closes on its own.

Where Delayed Action Helps Most

Delayed Action and the ADA

Delayed action adds time before the closing sweep starts; it does not replace the ADA closing speed rule. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, the door must still take at least 5 seconds to move from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Many facilities set 5–15 seconds of delay on primary corridors, depending on the users.

Delayed Action on Fire Doors

Delayed action is permitted on fire-rated doors when the closer is listed for that use, because the door still closes and latches by itself. A hold-open is different: it keeps the door open indefinitely and is only allowed on fire doors when released automatically by the fire alarm. The DRIWON DN-9500 is UL listed and 3-hour fire rated on rated assemblies; confirm the listing for each opening.

Setting delayed action: adjust the backcheck first, then the delayed action valve, then closing speed and latch speed. Our adjustment guide walks through each step.

Which DRIWON Closers Have Delayed Action?

Both models. The cast iron DN-9500 is the extra heavy duty choice for corridors, stairs and high-abuse doors; the aluminum DN-8220 suits interior doors with moderate traffic.

Delayed Action Door Closer FAQ

What does delayed action mean on a door closer?

A hydraulic valve slows the start of the closing cycle so the door pauses near the open position before it begins to close.

How long can delayed action hold the door?

It is adjustable. Many Grade 1 closers allow up to roughly 30 seconds; 5–15 seconds is typical on corridors.

Does delayed action count toward ADA closing time?

No. The door must still take at least 5 seconds to move from 90Β° to 12Β° from the latch. Delayed action adds time before that sweep begins.

Is delayed action allowed on fire doors?

Yes, when the closer is listed for use on the rated assembly, because the door still closes and latches on its own.

What is the difference between delayed action and hold-open?

Delayed action only pauses the closing cycle; the door always closes. Hold-open keeps the door open until someone releases it and is restricted on fire doors.

Do DRIWON door closers have delayed action?

Yes. Both the DN-9500 and the DN-8220 include an adjustable delayed action valve.
