A commercial door closer is a hydraulic device mounted on a door that closes it in a controlled way after opening. Commercial and Grade 1 models are tested to last far longer than residential units.
Grade 1 is the highest durability grade in the ANSI/BHMA A156.4 standard for door closers, intended for high-traffic commercial and institutional doors.

Both models are UL listed and 3-hour fire rated when installed on a rated door assembly. Always check the door label and local code.
Under the 2010 ADA Standards (section 404), interior hinged doors must open with no more than 5 lbf, and the closer sweep from 90° to 12° must take at least 5 seconds. Fire doors follow the minimum set by the authority having jurisdiction.
